Parent Letter

Dear Parents,

Please take some time to review the classroom rules and procedures with your student.

In AP Statistics, students will be exposed to four broad conceptual themes:

1.         Exploring Data: Describing patterns and departures from patterns

2.         Sampling and Experimentation: Planning and conducting a study

3.         Anticipating Patterns: Exploring random phenomena using probability and simulation

4.         Statistical Inference: Estimating population parameters and testing hypotheses

The purpose of the AP course in statistics is to introduce students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing and drawing conclusions from data.  We will do this using calculators and computers, by conducting classroom experiments, carrying out individual and group projects, and performing simulations involving probabilistic concepts.  Students will read and analyze more so than number crunching.

Please encourage your student to be active, engaged learners. Encourage them to come either before or after school for help.  A solution guide is available for them to check their work and students can come morning, afternoon, or during SMART period.  Be sure to check in with them as to their progress and email or call me with concerns.  Students who learn to ask for help are the most successful.

The AP Statistics test will be given Friday, May 15thAll students are required to take the exam.  Your students’ scores will be sent on to their college by the College Board.

Please sign below as an indication that you and your student have discussed the class rules and procedures.  Also, fill in the contact information. I will have periodic emails concerning class information.

Thanks and I look forward to a great year!!
