Library of Congress

The Library of Congress website allows students to serach for multitudes of information.  One of the most used features is the ability to search for images and primary resources.  Students may search many different databases. The Library Catalogs are searchable for print and multimedia materials, The American Memory focuses on primary resources from American history, Exhibitons allows users to view and search current or past exhibitons displayed at the LOC in DC, The Global Gateway focuses on international history and primary sources, and Thomas provides currect and historical information about the legislative branch of government.

NC LIVE

With NC LIVE, North Carolina libraries have statewide access to a rich array of electronic information including complete articles from over 16,000 newspapers, journals, magazines, and encyclopedias, and access to over 25,000 online print and audio books. See the library staff at school or at your public library for the password.

NC Wise Owl

NC WISE OWL is a Web site that has, as its centerpiece, several subscription databases. InfoTrac, a periodical database product by the Gale Group, is made up of a Kids Edition for elementary students, a Junior Edition for middle schoolers, and both the Student Edition and InfoTrac Gold Reference Edition for the high school and parent community. The Junior Reference Center and Kids InfoBits offer access to reference materials with a simplified format for greater ease of use. Also included in the Gale database collection is the Scribner Writers Series, with information on more than 1600 authors. Grolier Online offers two encyclopedias: The New Book of Knowledge for elementary and middle school students, and Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia for middle and high school students. Additional reference sources available include Lands & Peoples, Popular Science, America the Beautiful, and a collection of searchable eBooks in the Virtual Reference Center.

Wordle

Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.
